Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great holiday season and enjoyed the break. I am eager to see what 2016 has in store for my students, my family, and my friends! It is going to be a great year, I can tell!
This week we will jump right into our regular routines. Students will receive their homework packet tomorrow that is due on Friday.
Tomorrow is Day B. Our Special is Music.
We will have Library on Friday. Please be sure students start looking for their library books now so that they have them in their backpacks Thursday evening. If you would like to turn your student’s book in early, that is fine as well.
This week we will be reading the story The Big Circle. This story falls right into our Unit 2 theme of Community because the dinosaurs work together to protect the young. It is one of my favorite stories we will read! I love dinosaurs! With this story we will focus on the long o sound. Yes, King Ed will be here to remind that o to “SAY YOUR NAME!” We will also begin looking at contractions—specifically n’t, ‘m, ‘ll.
We will take our Unit 4 Progress Check on Tuesday and Wednesday. Unit 5 starts to introduce Place Value! Place Value is a difficult concept for first graders. We focus on what number is in the hundreds, tens, and ones place. We use base-10 blocks to help us. It is something that we will work hard on!
It is going to be very cold in the beginning of this week. Please be sure to dress students in layers and the proper outerwear. Students should not be using a sweatshirt as a jacket.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Bower
