Homework packets are handed out the first day of the week and should be returned that Friday. Students get full credit if the homework is turned in on time. Students should not turn in homework early because students should be reading every night to fill in the reading log (see below). The packet is not expected to be completed in one night. It is for students to work on at home throughout the week. Late homework will only be accepted Monday with a parent’s signature on the packet.
Cover Page: The cover page is for your record. It will have on it our spelling words and high frequency words. It will also have a box for the phonics skills of the week. Students are encouraged to practice reading the words in the skills box throughout the week. Last year, students would highlight the words they read correctly and as the week went on they noticed the whole box was highlighted!
Two Everyday Math Worksheets: These math worksheets will focus on skills students have learned in the classroom. It will come directly from our Everyday Math program. For assistance on Everyday Math Homework, please visit http://connected.mcgraw-hill.com/school/m8x7 and log into your student account.
Spelling Worksheet: This will typically be two sided to help students practice the Spelling words at home. The spelling words usually go along with the phonics skill of the week (for example, The Big Blue Ox focuses on short o – our spelling words have short o).
Reading Log: The Reading Log should be filled in every night. Students are expected to read 15-20 minutes a night at home. Students could either read to someone, read with someone (take turns), or listen to someone read. Students should read to someone at least two times a week. On the back of the reading log is the “Book of the Week” page. Students should pick one book they read at home that week that was the book they enjoyed the most. Then, students rate the book from 1-5 bees (1 being okay, 5 being a really great book). Students then illustrate their favorite part of the book and finally write about why they liked that book the best. Parents can fill out the reading log (front), but students are expected to fill out the Book of the Week page.
