Hello,
I forgot to mention a few things in my email from last night: -- PTO Whale Wishes were sent home in folders on Friday. You can pay $1 and write a message or wish on the whale for your student. These whales are displayed all around the school and students love seeing their personalized messages! Please return personalized whales and money in your student's blue Willett folder. -- September's Scholastic Book Order was submitted on Friday. Typically, it takes 2 weeks for the books to be delivered to school. Once they arrive at Willett I distribute the books to the students who ordered them. If you did not get a chance to order from September's order, or if you would like to order more books, I am sending home 4 October Book Orders. The orders will be due on 10/6. The best way to order is online by using our unique code GZV3K. When I am on maternity leave I will only be accepting online orders as I will not be in the classroom to collect orders and money to submit. Online orders I can submit right from home and then the teacher can distribute the books. Today we took our spelling pre-test. Students correct their own pre-test using crayon. I have also posted the spelling words on our classroom website: http://mrsbowergrade1.weebly.com/ Please have students practice these words all week in preparation for our spelling test on Friday. We have two tricky bonus words, but if both are correct on Friday students have a chance to earn 10 extra points -- meaning they could score 110% on the spelling test!! :) :) Mrs. Bower Happy Sunday,
I hope everyone was able to enjoy the beautiful Fall weather that finally showed up! We spent the weekend at birthday parties, Mr. Bower ran a 10K, and watching football with our family and friends. It was a busy, but fun weekend for the Bower family! In Reading Street this week we will read the story Pig in a Wig. With this story, students will practice the short i and final x sounds. We will talk about realism and fantasy (would a pig really wear a wig and do a jig?) and work on summarizing a story. Students' spelling words will have the short i sound. To view our spelling words, you can go to http://www.spellingcity.com/KelseyBower/ and look for list 1.2 Pig in a Wig. With the website Spelling City, students can play games and practice our spelling words! In Math this week we will continue to count on to larger numbers, practice number stories, and organize data. We will continue to work on sentence structure in Writing. Students have Gym on Thursday, please be sure to send your child in wearing sneakers. Please also continue to send your student in with a snack and a water bottle. Have a great week, Mrs. Bower Thank you to all of those who attended Welcome Back Night last night! It was so nice to see and meet so many families... and to see so many former students! :)
I am hoping this link will work for the video that I could not get to play last night at Welcome Back Night! Classroom Rules Video Hello,
Usually my weekly updates will go out late Sunday night, but I had some free time now so I wanted to send it out. We have FINALLY finished our alphabet review! Woohoo! Come to Welcome Back Night to check out your student's alphabet book! This week we will start our first Reading Street Unit. This week we will read Sam, Come Back! It is all about a cat (Sam) who "runs away" - hides around the house. Throughout this week we will be working on the short a sound and final -ck. Students will be introduced to spelling words and our spelling routine. While we will have a "spelling test" on Friday, I do not count this first spelling test. It is more to get students used to our weekly spelling routine. You will receive a list of spelling words on Monday to practice with your child. Typically, the spelling words will be in your child's homework packet-- however, we do not start homework until October. Thus, for the time being I will send the week's list home each Monday. In Writing this week, we will continue to focus on sentence structure. We have been talking about how sentences always start with a capital (some say uppercase) and end with an ending mark. We also have been talking about the "who" and the "what" that each sentence should have. We have been using Empowering Writer's "Sentence a Day" program to review these skills. Later in the week, students will take their Writing District Common Assessment. Students will need to write a narrative piece. This is really just a baseline for me to know your student's writing ability. In Math, we will contine practicing counting strategies (by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s) as well as start to compare numbers. In Math we use the program Everyday Math. Each student has a login for the Everyday Math Site and can access games and lessons online! Look for more information on this soon! Thursday is Welcome Back Night at Willett! Families are encouraged to come to Willett anytime between 6-8pm to check out the classroom and school. I will be making a presenation from 6:25-6:40pm so please try to make it for that time! Mr. Cateon set up specific times for each grade level to give a presentation. If you miss my presentation, you will still receive information on your student's desk- however, the presentation is not repeated or delayed as the presentation schedule impacts every grade at Willett. If you miss the presentation, you can still find me in our classroom. Students who attend with their parents will be able to complete a scavenger hunt in the classroom and around the school to earn Bower Bucks! :) Please note, Welcome Back Night is not a night for Parent Conferences. While I would love to sit there and discuss your child (and every child), it is not what the night is intended for. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held in early November; should we need a meeting before that you can send a note or email and we can schedule one. Please continue to send your student in with a water bottle daily. Many students are forgetting to come into school with one, causing a disruption during teaching/learning time. Thursday is the day we have gym. Students must wear sneakers for gym class. Have a great rest of your weekend! Go Pats! Tomorrow is a half day. This mean school starts at 8:45. Doors will not open to Willett until 8:30am. Please be aware of the time change. We will be dismissing from school at 12:30. There will be no lunch tomorrow. Please send your student in with an extra snack tomorrow.
Tomorrow is also hat day. Students can bring in a ream of paper for your teacher and wear a hat for the day. Please be sure to join me at Welcome Back Night on Thursday, 9/22 from 6-8pm! :) Book Orders are due on Friday, 9/23. We cannot accept cash. You can send in a personal check with the books you would like to order; or the best way is to order online by going to scholastic.com/readingclub and entering our classroom code: GZV3K. You can order early online, and I will submit the whole classroom order on 9/23. Thursdays we have gym. Please send students in wearing sneakers on Thursdays. Thank you, Mrs. Bower |
