Usually my weekly updates will go out late Sunday night, but I had some free time now so I wanted to send it out.
We have FINALLY finished our alphabet review! Woohoo! Come to Welcome Back Night to check out your student's alphabet book!
This week we will start our first Reading Street Unit. This week we will read Sam, Come Back! It is all about a cat (Sam) who "runs away" - hides around the house. Throughout this week we will be working on the short a sound and final -ck. Students will be introduced to spelling words and our spelling routine. While we will have a "spelling test" on Friday, I do not count this first spelling test. It is more to get students used to our weekly spelling routine. You will receive a list of spelling words on Monday to practice with your child. Typically, the spelling words will be in your child's homework packet-- however, we do not start homework until October. Thus, for the time being I will send the week's list home each Monday.
In Writing this week, we will continue to focus on sentence structure. We have been talking about how sentences always start with a capital (some say uppercase) and end with an ending mark. We also have been talking about the "who" and the "what" that each sentence should have. We have been using Empowering Writer's "Sentence a Day" program to review these skills. Later in the week, students will take their Writing District Common Assessment. Students will need to write a narrative piece. This is really just a baseline for me to know your student's writing ability.
In Math, we will contine practicing counting strategies (by 1s, 2s, 5s, and 10s) as well as start to compare numbers. In Math we use the program Everyday Math. Each student has a login for the Everyday Math Site and can access games and lessons online! Look for more information on this soon!
Thursday is Welcome Back Night at Willett! Families are encouraged to come to Willett anytime between 6-8pm to check out the classroom and school. I will be making a presenation from 6:25-6:40pm so please try to make it for that time! Mr. Cateon set up specific times for each grade level to give a presentation. If you miss my presentation, you will still receive information on your student's desk- however, the presentation is not repeated or delayed as the presentation schedule impacts every grade at Willett. If you miss the presentation, you can still find me in our classroom. Students who attend with their parents will be able to complete a scavenger hunt in the classroom and around the school to earn Bower Bucks! :) Please note, Welcome Back Night is not a night for Parent Conferences. While I would love to sit there and discuss your child (and every child), it is not what the night is intended for. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held in early November; should we need a meeting before that you can send a note or email and we can schedule one.
Please continue to send your student in with a water bottle daily. Many students are forgetting to come into school with one, causing a disruption during teaching/learning time.
Thursday is the day we have gym. Students must wear sneakers for gym class.
Have a great rest of your weekend!
Go Pats!
