I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend... I can't believe the warm weather is back! I can't say that I'm too happy about it. It will be warm in the classroom this week. Please send your student in with a water bottle and appropriate clothing. Layers are great for the cool mornings and hot afternoons.
On Thursday we had our first Library class! Students did a wonderful job in the library using shelf-markers and finding books. Please be sure your student returns his/her library book by Thursday so a new one can be checked out. Last year many students would bring it in the day before (so in this case, Wednesday) just so that they knew it would be back in time for Library. :) That is always very helpful!
Homework will start this Monday... as in tomorrow!!! :) Many students have been eagerly waiting for the day homework will start. The front cover page of the homework explains what is expected to be completed each night. Homework packets go home on Monday and need to be returned completed on Friday. Students will have 1 task to do each night (i.e. a spelling page, math page, or something else) and then also need to read for 15 minutes each night (and fill out the yellow reading log). The student can read to you, you can read to your student, or you can both read together.
Our story of the week this week is titled Get the Egg! It is about an egg that falls out of a nest and how children are respectful and responsible in helping get the egg back to the nest. Our phonics skills this week will be short e and initial blends. We will focus on realism and fantasy while also looking at the story's structure as our story is Realistic Fiction.
In Math we will continue on with Unit 2. We will continue to practice adding and subtracting using strategies, identifying ten-frames and how to make ten, as well as counting large quantities of items.
In Writing we are still focusing on sentence structure. Students are having a very hard time including the "who" and the "what" of a sentence, as well as starting with a capital and ending with an ending mark.
Have a great week,
Mrs. Bower
